What is JPG?
JPG (or JPEG) is a widely used raster image format optimized for photographs and realistic scenes. It uses lossy DCT-based compression with an adjustable quality setting and typically chroma subsampling (e.g., 4:2:0) to shrink file size by discarding imperceptible color detail. Standard JPGs are 8-bit per channel, usually in sRGB, and can be baseline or progressive for faster perceived loading on the web. The format supports EXIF metadata but not true transparency or layers, so it isn’t ideal for logos, text, or sharp line art. Use PNG or SVG for graphics, and WebP/AVIF for smaller, modern photos. To preserve quality, export at a higher quality value (e.g., 85–92) and avoid repeated re-saves, which accumulate compression artifacts.
What is TGA?
TGA (Truevision TARGA) is a raster image format created for early frame-grabber hardware and widely used in PC games and VFX pipelines. A .tga stores pixels as uncompressed or RLE-compressed data with color depths from 8-bit indexed and 8-bit grayscale to 16/24/32-bit truecolor; 32-bit files include an 8-bit alpha channel. Its simple 18-byte header, optional color map, and bottom-left origin make it easy to parse; many viewers treat channels as BGR(A). TGA 2.0 adds extension areas for metadata and developer tags, but the format remains lightweight and robust. Artists still export TGA for texture maps, matte passes, and assets needing crisp alpha, then convert to PNG/WebP for web delivery.
