What is JPG?
JPG (or JPEG) is a widely used raster image format optimized for photographs and realistic scenes. It uses lossy DCT-based compression with an adjustable quality setting and typically chroma subsampling (e.g., 4:2:0) to shrink file size by discarding imperceptible color detail. Standard JPGs are 8-bit per channel, usually in sRGB, and can be baseline or progressive for faster perceived loading on the web. The format supports EXIF metadata but not true transparency or layers, so it isn’t ideal for logos, text, or sharp line art. Use PNG or SVG for graphics, and WebP/AVIF for smaller, modern photos. To preserve quality, export at a higher quality value (e.g., 85–92) and avoid repeated re-saves, which accumulate compression artifacts.
What is HEIC?
HEIC is a file extension for images saved in the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF), a modern container based on the ISO Base Media File Format. In Apple’s ecosystem, “HEIC” typically means HEIF images encoded with HEVC (H.265). Compared with JPEG, HEIC delivers similar or better visual quality at much smaller sizes, and supports advanced features: 10-bit color, wide-gamut profiles, transparency, multiple images per file (bursts, Live Photos), depth maps, and rich metadata. HEIC opens on iOS, macOS, and most modern Android devices; Windows 10/11 can add support via HEIF/HEVC extensions. For web or legacy tools, convert to JPG or PNG, or to AVIF when targeting maximum compression with broad browser support. HEIC is ideal for phone photography, archives, and efficient cloud storage.
