What is Opus?

Opus is a modern, royalty-free audio codec standardized by the IETF (RFC 6716) that excels at both speech and full-band music. It blends Skype’s SILK and Xiph’s CELT technologies to deliver transparent quality from very low bitrates (≈6 kbps) up to 510 kbps, with ultra-low latency using 2.5–60 ms frames. Opus supports variable bitrate, constant bitrate, and constrained VBR; features include packet-loss concealment, in-band forward error correction, and adaptive complexity for real-time networks. Files typically use the .opus extension in an Ogg container, and streams appear in WebM/Matroska. Native support in browsers and WebRTC makes Opus the default for voice chat, calls, gaming, and live streaming; many players and OSes also decode it. Compared with MP3/AAC at the same size, Opus usually sounds cleaner, especially for speech.

What is AIFF?

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is a lossless audio container introduced by Apple and SGI in 1988 for professional production. A .aiff (or .aif) file typically stores uncompressed PCM audio in big-endian byte order, with sample rates up to 192 kHz and resolutions up to 24/32-bit. Because it’s PCM, playback is bit-perfect and supports precise editing, looping, and sample-accurate markers. AIFF-C (AIFC) adds optional compression codecs such as IMA4 and µ-law, though plain AIFF remains most common. The format supports metadata via classic chunks (NAME, AUTH) and modern ID3v2 tags, and is widely compatible with DAWs like Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton, and media players on macOS/Windows. Compared with WAV, AIFF offers similar quality; WAV tends to be little-endian and more ubiquitous on Windows.
