What is WAV?

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is a RIFF-based container most often holding uncompressed PCM audio. Because PCM stores samples directly—no perceptual compression—WAV delivers bit-perfect quality and sample-accurate editing, making it a staple for recording, mixing, sound design, and archival masters. Common settings include 44.1–192 kHz sample rates and 16–32-bit depth, mono to multichannel. WAV supports metadata via LIST/INFO, BWF (Broadcast WAV, with BEXT timecode and loudness fields), and optional iXML. Classic WAV tops out around 4 GB per file; RF64 and WAV64 variants remove that limit for long multitrack sessions. While WAV is universally compatible across DAWs and operating systems, files are large; for lossless storage with tagging, many users compress to FLAC or ALAC and export WAV only for production and delivery.

What is MP3?

MP3 (MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio codec designed to shrink music and speech files dramatically while preserving acceptable fidelity. It works by transforming audio into the frequency domain, modeling human perception to discard masked detail, then encoding with Huffman coding and variable-length frames. Typical bitrates range from 96–320 kbps; 128 kbps was common historically, while 192–256 kbps VBR offers better transparency today. MP3 stores stereo, joint-stereo, or mono, supports ID3 tags for artwork and metadata, and plays virtually everywhere—phones, cars, smart speakers, and browsers. Although AAC and Opus are more efficient at the same bitrate, MP3 remains the most compatible choice for distribution and archiving. For best results, rip from lossless sources and avoid repeated re-encoding.
